How has technology influenced this generation?

A digital native is a person who has grown up with digital technology such as computers, the Internet, mobile phones and MP3. A digital immigrant is an individual who grew up without digital technology and adopted it later.

Blog your feelings about this statement.

I think our generation depends too much on technology cause we have grown up with, so if something was to happen to our technology most of us would be lost. Some people would be able to adapt to not having technology but most would be lost if we didnt have the technology that we have today. At least thats what i think.

Its true. For example with my parents, they are internet ill literate. With me being raised in a technology advanced society and being forced to use it at school, it is easy for me to use it. However, with the older generation not used to the technology, it is easy for them to get left behind. If the older person doesn't go back to school or work on learning the new technology...they will get left behind. I am sure that when my generation is old...er, the same thing will happen to us.

I think that the statement isn't necessarily true for all people. I grew up with cell phones, and internet, and computers and i am not as well equipped as i wish i was. True I grew as the technology did, but still its sad today to see people like our parents and grandparents struggle with the advances in technology. So i guess the statement could be true in most cases today. Im undecided, on the line, balanced.

I think that it is a good thing that we have grown up with technology, It will help us greatly in the future. And it expands our opportunities. I do think that it makes things a little bit to easy. If you become to dependent on technology you miss out on some things.

I think that our generation is way too dependable on technology these days. I mean now that we have our laptops, nobody carries paper or pencil around with them anymore because they are so adapted to doing everything on the computers. I think that we better skills than our parents and grandparents do because we are taught to handle and work the technology now rather then what was around when they were kids. I know for me, when i ask my mother how to do something on our laptops, she has no idea what to do because she isn't experienced with the technology.

I would have to say our generation of people are very into technology because we grew up with it all around us the first cell phones, internet, all new kinds of computers and gadgets. But then again we rely on technology and gadgets way to much because if we lost all of that stuff a lot of people would freak out. So its kind of good to not know all about gadgets and technology in my opinion.

well first of all i grew up around technology and i have no idea how to use most of it without any help, like computers especially and cell phones, i barely use mine and if i do it is for calling and not texting( too expensive) and my mother grew up with out it and she is doing just fine without it and she has a cellphone and she knows more about that then i do so that is all i have to say about that!

I think that this new century depends on to much technology and cell phones and modern technology. What would people do if there was no more power or electricity? We would have to go back to paper and pencil. I didn't have cell phones or internet when i was growing up. I would rather stick to paper and pencil because you always can't depend on computers to do your work for you. Well that is what i think.

our generation depends on technology to get things done, which is good until something happens.. if something were to happen alot of the newer generation people would stuggle because that what we knew how to do, on the other hand our parents would be all right because they didnt have technology so they know how to live without it

well i hate to admit but as a child i was a technology immigrant... but i think "now a days" technology needed for a lot of things...school being one of them. i think our soceity just might rely on technology a little bit much...but at the same time it does make everything a lot easier... as for the cartoon if i had a nickle for every time an adult told me the " i walked through seven miles of snow....barefoot..... I Would Be A Millionaire..

I think that our generation does pretty much everything with technology. and I see when I'm talking to my grandparents how technology is a big part of our lives now because they often need help from their grandkids.
we grew up using the internet, cell phones, and mp3. it would be really hard not using all of this things.
and we would pretty much be lost without that kind of technology we have now.

i think that any one that doesnt know any thing about technology has a good chance of being lost without in the US because i think that we totaly depend on technology . But i also think that it helps to make are economy faster and and better because our generation is very dependent on technology.

Our generation does depend on technology too much. They say we are progressing quicker and its true but like the stuff we used to do before all this technology came into play like playing outside(for kids) doing more work outside. We dont do that as much. Well alot of people dont.

I agree with the statement. But how far do you go back before you consider the technology actually beginning. I think growing up in the technology age really does help though because for example my mom hates the computer and doesn't know how it works and isn't willing to take the time to learn but when we had to type up some scholarships with a type writer i had no idea how to use it and she had to teach me.

Anonymous said...

How coincidental mom and I were talking about this last night, you know what that means? Right! Another long post, congrats!

Personally I think that our generation is extremely dependent on technology. If you told somebody today that everything that happens in the world economy and the world governments could still happen without the internet or computers they would probably have an argument of how it would never work...granted it would happen much slower without the instantaneous sharing given to us by the internet.

If, for any reason, all technology was disabled in the world (by technology I mean computers, television, MP3 players, cell phones, that kind of thing), I do not think the world could survive, at least not the younger generation. Older people who have experience living without all of the modern devices of today would probably fair just fine and be able to educate the younger people in what they would need to do to survive (provided they could get them to listen).

When we first got our computer my parents would very much be considered "digital immigrants" because they could not even power on the thing let alone use it. Since then my mom has learned how to use it but my dad will be the first to tell you that he can't even turn it on, and he won't learn.

I would consider myself, and of course my entire generation digital natives, because when I say MP3 player or iPod to one of my friends they know what I am talking about, contrasted to if I talk about MP3 players in front of my grandpa who looks at me as if I were speaking in a foreign language.

I think the only disadvantage of being of a "digital immigrant" rather than a "digital native" is that technology is always changing. If you have not been extensively exposed to technology you may be left behind when you get a technology intensive job and then just when you learn the current technology they bring in the "newest model!" which is probably more complicated than the older model.

Being a digital native a person knows about technology and therefore can learn faster and remember more about how to use the computer, iPod, cell phone, whatever it may be. My cousin (is three years old) and I taught her how to log on the computer and she was playing her leap frog games in no time without my help at all, this goes to prove that younger people CAN learn technology faster than older people who were not raised around the technology.

To wrap it up, technology is amazing, and it's amazing that we have all of the technology that we do have! In contrast (to my own thought) we cannot become too dependent on technology at least not where it infringes on our daily lives to the extent that we DEPEND on it. Whether or not you want to agree the sad truth is computers are not going to last forever, yes they will get better before they get worse, they will expand before they contract but eventually the computer will fall to the side and we will need to live without it. Despite being able to do millions of millions of computations each second a computer is a very sensitive instrument, some scientists are actually studying terrorist attacks that ONLY affect computers because of the devastating effects that they would have on the world.

Computers will not last forever, I mean if you look at the past people probably thought the abacus was going to last forever too! (Google abacus if you don't know what it is).

So, back to my point! We cannot grow so dependent on technology, but I do think that we have grown overly dependent on it already.

Oh yeah, sorry I rambled on again, you'll get used to it =D

well i have grown up with technology so i would not know how hard it is to walk to use the internet and i think that the people who grew up with out it would not be as good as the people who grew up with the internet and i think that i would not be able to do my work without the computer and i think that i would not like it if wasnt able to do my work on the internet and my parents got one and i wanted one ever since then and i think that every kid should be able to have a computer with the internet and the parents who did have the internet when they grew up would wrather not have a computer and they want all the new stuff that comes out these years.

i would not know how hard it is to grow up with out the computers and not have mobile phones and stuff and i would rather not have a house phone and every thing else. if i was the people that didnt have internet when they didn't grow up with it because i would then adopt it when i was done with school and if my parents didnt let me have one i would spend all of my money on them and i could do whatever i wanted on it and my parents couldnt stop me and i could do what i wanted and they wouldnt be able to tell me that i cant use my computer and all the stuff that i do on it they wont be able to stop.

if i was that person who grew up without internet i would tell my parents to by me some so that i can do my homework on it but i doubt it that they would do that for me and i think it would be better for all the kids and there family so that way they dont have to every thing in a store they can do there family photos on them.

I think growing up with technology is and was a great thing. I think it makes things so much easier. It is also entertaining.

I think the biggest difference in our generation from others is that what is kind of second nature to us is something that our parents or grandparents have never even heard or seen before. We have so many more opportunities than other generations to learn and communication around the globe.

I agree with the statement because my generation has been born into the technology generation and we have become more in touch with it and have adapted to it. Unlike most of our parents and grandparents who do not know squat about technology have not adapted to it as well as my generation has.

I think technology has put a big influence on today's generation. On a positive note, it has helped to quicken communication and means of traveling. On a negative note, I think it has also made people more lazy, including myself. Instead of going to see someone to tell them something, you send them an e-mail even if they are just down the street!

This is so true. my parents know how to use the internet, but when it comes to programming, and other technical stuff, they either go to my brother or my uncle. both excellent with computers. i know some stuff about technology, but not as much as i want too.

Anonymous said...

I would say that our generation is very dependent on technology..it some ways thats a good thing and in some ways its a bad...for example us being quite educated in technology it allows for us to be able to get more done and do it more efficiently! But at the same time if something were to happen where we would lose all means of technology our generation would be completely lost!!

Anonymous said...

I think technology is a great thing! I feel I am lucky to be a digital native. Sometimes its fustrating to try and teach people who don't know much about technology. It's important to be able to use the computer and all the other types of technology in order to be successful in today's society.

Anonymous said...

I think our generation is to dependent on technology, even though sometimes it can be a good thing to have technology it can also be a bad thing because it takes our focus off more important things. The older generation sometimes has a harder time learning to use technology because they didn't grow up with it in their lives.

Anonymous said...

I live my life by Technology so I would have trouble adapting to life without it. Technology has greatly updated the world.

Anonymous said...

I believe the statement is true. I know way more than my parents about technology and resources from the internet. I understand that they can learn with time and that they are not completely useless to technology. I use technology like all the time and they are still understanding what a mp3 means or what a firewire is.

Anonymous said...

As a digital native, I think the biggest way technology has influenced this generation is through communication. People are so easily connected to each through text messaging and emails etc and are always informed and know what's going on. Whether it's a good thing or a bad thing is argued about by many people. I think digital immigrants are adopting this idea too, as I see a lot of older people who tens years before, wouldn't have had any idea how connected they would be today.

I agree that we are to reliant on technology and that we need to use less of it. But in our world today I don't think we can go without it. Besides for like games, projects and other fun things to work on. There are so many things that you can do with technology. I don't think that anyone that didn't grow up with technology could ever use it now because we have grown too dependent on it!

Anonymous said...

Well your question is "HOW has technology influenced this generation". Thinking about that, I would have to say that technology has made us a group of people who are extremely impatient, spoiled, and greedy. At lunch today we were talking about how just 100 years ago there wasn't hardly anything. No TVs, no running water, no hop into the car and grab McDonald's or text 40 people at once. If the power goes out for half an hour everyone goes crazy today because they can't take a shower or watch Grey's Anatomy or make a Hot Pocket! Our technology seems to have benefited us but truly, it has just made us extremely dependent.

I agree I love this new technology with computers and the musical devices are just awesome but cell phone we can see technology has its troubles too cell phones sometimes work and other times they don't and it seems when you need them the most they don't work But growing up with the technology helps us understand it more then the older people that it comes harder for the to understand how it works cell phones, computers, MP3.

This statement is definitely true. It is good and bad I feel. I think it is a positive in the way that things are much easier for us in life. Such as we have the internet to search for any information we need. There are many cool things in technology that we can enjoy that keep us entertained. I feel that our society is much more advanced in life because of the technology. The negatives are not as many people get out to do the things that our parents and grandparents did. Kids nowadays are often kept inside by video games and internet. There is many more cases of obesity because kids don't get outside as much. I'm not saying this is the only reason, because a big part of it is what they eat. I think I would be lost without a lot of the technology though!

Anonymous said...

I think technology is extremely useful but I also think we are getting too dependent on it. But, I just cant imagine living without it today, our world would be sooo much slower. I personally like fast paced life...so I plan on keeping technology around me. It just crazy to think that 15 years ago people used books to do research papers, now it is almost crazy to hear of high school students doing that. we all you use the internet because it is so much more convinient!!

Anonymous said...

I think it helps being born into a technology world as far as understanding it goes. My parents for example, have had to adopt to the internet and other technology, and they don't always understand how it all works. Growing up with it and understanding it definatly opens up your options in life if you want to persue a field in technology. At the same time however, technology will only advance, and I'm sure that thirty years down the road, we will have to adapt to different technology too.

Anonymous said...

Today's generation is extremely dependent on technology, not only for its advancement, but its convenience too. I think too many people see technology as a way to shortcut through work, where few others use it to get more work done. We have been given a great opportunity and I don't think that enough people see it as so...

Anonymous said...

Well a lot of adults are this way the have to adapt to the new technology. My generation; however, has grown up with this technology, so it isn't very hard for us to use and adapt to new things.

Well, I think I would be a digital native. I've used technology my whole life. I guess I feel that it is very beneficial to grow up with technology, and people who didn't grow up with technology probably will never be able to achieve as deep a comprehension as someone who did.

Anonymous said...

I grew up with technology but I still don't know how to do everything. My mom didn't grow up with technology and she manages just fine. I don't know that I'd call them immigrants because that makes you think of someone from a different country.

Anonymous said...

I believe that statement is true. I love how much technology has advanced, but I do think we are to dependent on it. Just working at Subway the other day when the power went out made me realize how lost we get with out our computer. There were 5 (all of them being teenagers)people working at the time and only 2 could manually ring up the order. It was really sad!!!

I definitely think technology has completely changed the way our parents grew up from the way we have grown up. I think technology has had a good impact on education and communication by allowing us ways to learn and talk to others that before were never possible. Some people are a little obsessive over technology such as always talking on their cell phone and constantly checking it for messages. Technology is becoming the new lifestyle and change is just a part of life, so i think it is great we have gotten to be around it growing up because it is only going to advance as we get older.

This generation without a doubt will more than likely be the most computer savvy kids on the planet. They are going to know everything about technology including all the downsides as well. I already no of kids that know how to even create virus'. (none in this school). but its just crazy how this generate will probably end up with the worst carpel tunnel in the world.

Anonymous said...

Our generation relies on technology too much its very rare that you go somewhere and not see at least one teen texting or talking on there phone

Anonymous said...

I think that the people who have had technology like that to there disposal there whole life probably depend on that sort of stuff too much. Because they've had it there whole life they just wouldn't know what to do without it. As for digital immigrant, they don't need all that technology or what I mean is that they don't need it as much as a digital native because they have learned to live life without all that technology. So if you have had technology your whole life, its hard to get used to life without it. You get way to dependent on it. But if your a digital immigrant your not dependent on all that technology.
