In this week's blog, I want you to tell me why you think some students just don't do their work? Are they just unmotivated, don't care, or Senioritis??? Digital Media, Web Design and Digital Design are project based classes and some students just do not do their projects, making them fail.
What can I do as a teacher to improve this?

My thoughts on why kids are not getting there work in is lack of motivation. I know that it is hard for me to get some work in sometimes but i dont just not do it. That is being just plain lazy. I dont think that there is a whole lot any teacher can do at this part of the year to motivate students.

I think why some students don't do their projects is because they feel that they don't need to work on them all the time and when the time comes when there due they don't have time to finish them and don't have them completed. Also some students are just unmotivated and senioritis plays a role in not completing projects. I think as a teacher you could force the students to work on them all the time.
I think some kids don't do their work because there isn't a set date when everything has to be turned in. Some kids need more structure in order for them to be productive. As a teacher I think you should determine which students need the extra attention and check on them regularly to make sure they are doing the things they need to do!
Personally, I think these people must just not care. Being a senior, or even a junior, people should understand colleges aren't going to reward you for bad grades. This could be an class where everyone gets good grades in it easily if they just do their projects...so I don't really get it. I can see where a student could fall behind in a math class and get so deep they have no desire to get back on top, but really...making a movie should be more fun than that!! As a teacher I would nag on them for about a week if they weren't getting their stuff done then after that just let them fail. Its not your fault they don't care!!
I think that kids don't do their homework because they don't want to or just put it off. Some people are just lazy and unmotivated. If they don't see direct results or if they don't receive something (other then a grade) then kids wont do it.
As a teacher I don't see anything that you can do.. it is just the individuals job to do it themselves.
Personally, I'm afraid that I actually have JUNIORITIS! Or maybe it's just "schoolitis" because personally I've been this way my whole life. I'm terrible at getting things done because I'm a huge procrastinator and it's hard for me to sit down and focus on something that I don't want to do. This class has a lot of freedom, which is great but truthfully, maybe we have a little TOO much freedom. I love that as a teacher, you give us the chance to just "GO!" and work independently but sometimes, even though we ARE juniors and seniors, we probably need to be reminded to do our projects.
I think why some students don't complete an assignment is that maybe they don't understand some of it and the teachers are never online or never answer their e-mails to answer the questions. Also I think mostly were lazy, we think that we don't have to do the work. I agree with Hayley in that Junioritis set in last year and it doesn't really seem important to accomplish anything because were SENIORS now! IDK!
I know that looking at myself, i get bored doing homework that i have been doing all day. Although i look at digital media as a fun class, my others aren't and so i "Forget" or let myself forget about homework and go out and do other things. I do believe for me senioritis is a big thing for me as well. I look at it as im graduating why do i need it? i know thats not true but thats how i think. Motivation is a lacking thing with everyone this year and i dont know why. I think we all need to get motivated and finish strong.
i think that the kids have no time because they work or they just don't care about doing it because they may think that it is a waste of time
Kids don't do their work because they think they have better things to do during the class period like catching up on gossip. Giving them plenty of warnings should be enough to motivate them but if they don't want to listen then their just going to have to learn for themselves when report card time comes around. If they aren't interested in what their doing they should have checked into a different class instead of wasting everyones time.
lack of motivation and lazyness. procrastination is a big part and then when the time comes i dont want to do it. I dont know what a teacher should do about this.
I don't think kids do their work because they get disturb trying to do other things. Its hard to do homework when you want to go and look at other things on the computer.

I think the reason that a lot of kids don't get their assignments done is because of two things: just not wanting to do it and putting it off until its too late and because there isn't always a specific due date on things. I know for me, its not always easy to get my assignments done on time even though I know that they are going to be due really soon. I don't really know how teachers can motivate at this point in the year but I'm sure there is some way...

Some students don't do some work because it's "too hard" or "not exciting enough" and one of my favorites (I actually heard this one year) "It isn't done for me already!"
Most people who don't do their work are lazy, they figure that the teacher will take pity on them and give them time to make it up later, and give them time in class...This isn't true obviously.
Some would say it goes back to a students home life, if mom and dad do everything for the student and encourage laziness then that student will be lazy at school...probably not all correct...Everyone has free will, all students can choose what they do, how soon they do it, and if they want to fail. If your parents let you be lazy at home then fine, but school is one thing and home is a complete 180.
Some students, as you stated, don't care. Mom and dad support them when they are 16 and 17 so that means mom and dad will support them when they are 36 and 37...again probably not entirely accurate. Some students don't understand that a good education can help in more ways than just making a ton a money.
One of my friends (not from OHS) actually told me that she might drop out of school because her dad (who does have money) will support her later on in life so there is no reason for her to work hard...I pretty much told her that's a stupid way to look at and told her to rethink.
I skipped over the unmotivated part until the end, I figure it will make a good ending piece for this blog. A student may take a class such as Digital Media, Web Design, or Digital Design thinking it will be a walk in the park, you know you sit in front of a computer for 55 minutes, how hard can that be? When a student gets in the class they realize that, surprise, there is work involved! WHO KNEW!?!?!?! After a student realized that the work isn't as easy as they had planned they begin to tell themselves that they can't do it, hence they become unmotivated and aren't willing to even try.
As a teacher what you can you do? There isn't much, that is unless you can think of a way to make a student think something is, or can be, fun when they have convinced themselves that it is boring.
Oh sorry for the length, I sort of rambled...again...
My thoughts on why they aren't getting work done is because they just don't want to do it or they don't feel like they can do the video. But some people can be plain lazy and not do anything. Now for me its a little hard to get me motivated to start a project but once I do I'll get it done and sometime I don't. But I really think trying to get anyone motivated to do anything this far through the year would be hard.

It think people aren't getting things done because the year is almost over and they're just feeling like slacking. Plus its hard to motivate kids to do homework when they don't want to.

I think kids just aren't doing anything because they year is so close to being over. Plus its hard to get motivated this close to the end of the year. But then there is just plain laziness which anyone can lazy and sometimes once you are its hard to get back on to doing things.
i think that lazyness is a big part of it.
but for instance, i need a date where its due and i can focus on stuff much better like 3-4 days before that date, because i know that i have to finish it! and in those 3-4 days im workin a lot on it and not that much before that.
i think kids just need the feeling that they have to hand it in soon otherwise they ll fail. i dont think that you can do a lot as a teacher, other that letting them fail when their project isnt done at the date it was due.
i think that it is lack of motivation on there part not on the teachers part .I think that trying to encourage the students would mabey help the problem with students not getting there home work done over all though it comes down to lack of dedication o working your hardest on everything that you do .
well, i think motivation could be the reason for some students, motivation or time, because the projects we are assigned are not difficult they are just time consuming. which is fine, but again some people are big procrastinators. i don't think there is much more you can do as long as your posting announcements on angel. i guess you could remind us a couple times in class but, other than that, there is not much more you can do. maybe to motivate people we could have "best movie awards" or something!

I THINK THE REASON SOME KIDS DON'T DO THERE WORK BECAUSE THEY GOT SO MUCH GOING ON IN THERE LIFE AND THEY ARE TO BUSY DOING THERE OWN STUFF AND THEY THINK THAT THEY DONT HAVE TO DO THEM AND WHEN THE TIME COMES TO HAND THEM IN THEY THINK THAT THEY WILL HAVE TIME TO DO THEM AND THEY ALSO THINK THAT THEY WONT FAIL THE CLASS IF THEY DONT HAVE THEM DONE AND I THINK THAT THEY CAN PASS THE CLASS WITH EVERYTHING THAT THEY DO AND I THINK THAT THE REASON I DONT DO IT IS BECAUSE I USUALLY DONT REALIZE HOW MUCH THESE PROJECTS DO FOR ME AND I ALSO THINK THAT I CAN PASS THIS CLASS IF I THINK THAT I CAN DO IT NO MATTER WHAT I DO IN THIS CLASS
I guess i don't always work on mine until usually they are due within a couple days then i just spend a lot of time within those couple days and get it all done. Maybe thats not the best way to do it but thats how i work i guess. I appreciate that you allow us so much space in this class. As for the ppl that don't do their work at all there is no excuse for that because you give out plenty of time.

i think that kids dont to their work is because they are lazy and some of them dont care about their school work and try and find better things to do during class time
i vote for lack of motivation and they just don't care.
I think that the main reason that students dont do there work is that they think that they have all the time in the world to do it and lack of motivation. They feel that they have alot of time so they can just put it off till later and then when they go to do it it takes longer than what they expected it to and they just dont get it done, and i also think that senioritis also plays a big role in students not getting there work done. I dont think that there is alot they a teacher could do at this point in the school year, but next year you could monitor a students progress everyday and see if they are actually working on there project and if there not have some sort of punishment i guess.

My problem is with the macs i tend to spend time on it and not on homework. I catch myself messing around on the internet and falling behind on homework. This makes me cram in homework at the last time. I think that it is a mix between not caring and senioritus that causes the students not to get their projects done. Im not sure what the teacher could do to help motivate the students. Being only a month left of school basically, the students probably just want to coast through.
I think what you could possibly do is set a maximum of videos that need to be done. you could also monitor the kids and tell them whenever you see them messing around on something other than their project that they are going to get a 0 out of 5 for the day. The project ian and i are working on would have been done alot earlier but my computer crashed because of too much memory. I'm not sure if any other kids have had that problem or not. People probably just don't care because they are almost ready to graduate, which is dumb to be that way.
Honestly, everyone is different and has their own reasons for not doing their work. "Busy", more important things to do, not a priority to them... etc. From a teacher's standpoint, all you can really do is encourage students to work for their grade and hope they try to help themselves. When it comes right down to it, students are the ones who have to take the responsibility for their work and getting it done...
Well, my initial thought is to make certain pieces of their projects due on certain dates to keep them in line and keep them going. Another factor is probably that some kids just decide not to do their homework or they just don't care. I think about the only thing you can do is just keep reminding the students and telling the ones that aren't doing something to keep working on it. I think that's about all you can do, and if they don't do it even after you tell them, it's their problem!
I think that kids dont do their homework because they are just unmotivated. They might not be interested in anything they are doing in that class...and not very many people like doing something they are not interested in. I also think some people just dont care...they do not realize how important grades are especially when you start to apply to colleges! But personally for me I would have to say I have a major case of SENIORITIS!!
I think that kids just sometimes get distracted by things happening outside of their work and end up forgetting about it or ignoring it. Basically by this time of year kids are getting lazy.
Sometimes kids don't do their work because lack of motivation, too much to do, or they just don't care. I wouldn't really know what to do in this situation, because I do most of my work because I don't want to fail and be in a class that i will have to retake or something. I like the projects in Digal Media class because they are fun and I am good at them.
They may just be unmotivated or just don't care. Some people just care more about certain classes than other people do so it would be better to find something that can motivate everyone to do their work.
I believe that most student just don't do their work because they are probably just unmotivated. Some of the really easy work doesn't get done either. That also I'm sure is due to unmotivation. I like to think that I get all my work done and in on time.
I don't think there is much you can do, the projects are interesting and fun to work on. I think a lot of it has to do with time management. I don't think a lot of the kids just do consider the time it takes to complete a project.

I think why student don't like to work is because they feel if they skip a few assignments they won't fail but then they start skipping more and more assignments. So overall they need to know that if they don't do one they will stop doing alot of assignments. Its like reverse drugs
Motivation I think is why some students don't do their stuff and doing other thing for different classes. They could be finishing something up for a different class and or sending something on Angle.
Lazy is a problem because at their house their parents do everything for them and then they come here and think if they don't do their work it will some how just get done by someone else and so that then they are just lazy.
I think some students don't do their work because they would rather get a bad grade then have to put some effort into making a project. So obviously school must not be that important to them that they would slack off, and I think it is a combination of lack of motivation and a don't care attitude that prevents them from doing projects. As a teacher I would talk to the ones that aren't doing their projects, ask them why they aren't doing them, and then figure out from there a plan to help them finish a project.

I think people just don't care. People aren't just motivated to do there work probably because its sort of an independent work thing. And because of that people just don't want to do there work.
Trevor Danielson
A lot of people just don't care but, I will admit that i am sometimes one of those people and, one thing that I have realized that if a teacher reminds you to do your work than they know you are watching them and the will do their work. Motivation works a lot too.
Justin Campbell
Some people don't do their work because their are ignorant fools, immature losers or just don't care about their life very much. Or the work could be difficult and not everybody knows how to do it but they don't ask for help because they feel embarrass about it because they tease them about it? To improve is to go around and ask if they need any help or anything to get them moving along.
April Babutzke
I think some students don't do the work because they simply have no idea how to do the work. That may not be the case for other students they may just be lazy.
I think it just comes with this time of year. Students see the end in sight and just lose their motivation. I don't think its so much that they blow it off and do nothing at all, because thats beyond a lack of motivation. I think its more that students are doing it, but not putting their best effort forward, and they get a half hearted project. As a teacher, I don't think there is much you can do because this happens in every class this time of year.
I personally think that some kids are lazy and dont care about their grades i dont what you should do about the kids that dont want to do their work i guess if they dont care than why should you.
Courtney Selby
I mainly think that as senior i just get a little lazy sometimes and put stuff off till the last min. and getting ready to graduate has alot to do with it too.
