Please read the following article and watch the video. I think you will find the story interesting and sad.

http://www.theledger.com/article/20080408/NEWS/804080385/1134

Please blog about what you think about this incident and what the parent's of the girl have to say about MySpace, YouTube, and the Internet.

The first time I saw this on the news I was astounded. They show absolutely no remorse for what they did. They don't even have a valid reason for doing what they did. It really makes you think of what people are capable of especially teenagers. I watched some of the tape that was released and it was crazy, they kept it up for half an hour. It's amazing she didn't have more damage then what she did.

I think it's really terrible what happened. As the parents said, they probably got this idea from shows like "Jackass", etc., and they think that the internet, MySpace and YouTube is one of the reasons why teenagers do stuff like that.
I don't think that the internet had a lot to do with that, but I guess stuff like Jackass, etc., isn't that good. It's fun watching it, so people could get the idea doing this, too.
I think that it's crazy what they did.

i think that the hole thing is crazy but i think that there is probibly more then just some girls beating up a cheer leader i think that it could be deeper and more personal but the girls still had no right at all to beat up a inesint girl.I can just imagine how upset the perents of the girl that got beet up are right right now and they will probibly always will be .it makes me think about the people around me every day because i dont think that a normal peerson

I think that the girls responsible were just simply going to do something stupid. The internet video factor obviously enticed them but the girls that did this were going to do something stupid.

I think the girls should have never started something in the first place. To solve their problem they should not have resorted to that beaten on that Lindsay girl. I think the eight girls that did the beating should be sent to juvenile.

First off, I wouldnt blame youtube, I would blame the person who put it up. And myspace is bad. Those kids who beat her up or had any involvement should do community service after they get out of jail.

That was just crazy i havent seen the video but i bet its probly really bad. It just goes to show how the internet now a days can influence anyone to do pretty much anything to get on the internet its just stupid. The thing that really amazed me is that the kids that did it had no remorse for what they did. I can only imagine what the parents are goin through, if i were the parent of that child i would probly try to get rid of every internet site that had anything to do with ppl recording themselves not using common sense.

when i first saw this, it was on 10/11 and I couldn't believe how someone could beat on another just for fun...and to make a video. When i watch it I get upset on how parents of these children don't watch their children better or don't even care about what they are doing. In today's society however, shows such as "DONKEY" are "entertaining" and make young men and women want to take part in such events. What they are not realizing is that they are tearing families apart and ultimately ruining the individuals life. I feel that Youtube and the social websites like myspace and facebook need to step up and block these videos from being shown on them. Even though this will not stop the beatings...it may slow them down.

I think that this is a bad deal that people have to beat on someone just over something stupid like myspace and i think that the girls should get charged with prison for at least a year

Anonymous said...

Its crazy how far people are starting to go for a little fame... to say that you want to break into someones house and beat someone is crazy... the parents have a legit reasoning why these websites should be off the internet but its never going to happen, and i hope they dont because i love watching youtube.

I cannot believe this actually happened. Who in their right minds would beat up some girl just because she was saying something mean to them. I mean, yea, I'm sure she wasn't very nice to the girls but it's the internet and it could have been anybody saying that to those girls. There is NO reason those girls should have done that. I think that every single person involved in the beating of Victoria should get life in prison so then they won't be able to do anything like that to anyone again.

Anonymous said...

I think the people who did it wanted to have a chance to get a big hit youtube video and would do anything to do it.

I think that is a terrible thing that happened to the girl. All the things that she will have to keep going through all of her life. I agree that they probably saw something like that on Youtube, MySpace etc. But they could have gotten the idea from so many other places, so I don't think that the internet is all to blame.

Anonymous said...

That was fairly sad..although I think most parents have to have an idea of what their children are doing on the internet so they should be aware of the serious consequences. I don't think you should take away myspace, youtube, or sites like that its just our society evolving and some people cant handle it..

Anonymous said...

I don't understand why anyone would do that to another person, it's just dumb. But I don't think it's the internets fault, I think it had little to do with it, just because there are some stupid people out there that do stuff like that doesn't mean it's because of sites like myspace or anything like that.

Anonymous said...

This was a horrible event and it's sad to hear especially the reaction the kids gave after doing this. It's scary people are able to do that to someone with no regrets afterwards.

Anonymous said...

This is just horrible. You wouldn't think that these teens would be capable of doing this. However, I am curious as to what exactly went into the cause of this beating. It didn't seem like there was any other reason but to post it to Youtube, but why would you do that? I think that would be horrible. I'm not really sure how Youtube or Myspace would actually provoke violence, like the dad says. I think there might be many other reasons for that beating, however undeserved it was.

I heard about this on the news but it was right after the Early Show's "Viral Video" so I thought it was all staged, I ignored the story altogether.
In the article they mentioned that YouTube and MySpace are desensitizing the youth, but I think it's all about how a person was raised and the morals they live by. Granted I do believe that YouTube could have caused this video in some ways. I have uploaded a couple of random videos on YouTube, it's fun to get reviews, it's always fun to get your video a 5 star rating, and some kids take that too much to heart and try to make a video that will get 1000 views and a 5 star rating.

For a long time I have spoken out against MySpace, I do not support it any sense, it is dangerous in almost all aspects. On other utilities, such as FaceBook, they make your profile a "contact-only" profile, until you change it only your friends can view it. On MySpace any pedophile or pervert can find your profile and learn all about you from MySpace.

Some of the content on YouTube, despite the YouTube/Google staff's attempts is not 100% clean. Almost always it is for the same reason, kids are putting these videos up to get ratings and views.

The girl got beaten and filmed for YouTube...that is ridiculous! The girl who got beaten was an innocent victim in a sadly growing crime. Hopefully this will open the eyes of some parents to monitor what their kids watch on the internet and what they are doing when they go out.

Thanks for reading!

DOWN WITH MYSPACE!

Anonymous said...

When i first heard about this i was a little set back. What those kids did was beyond idiotic and just plain cruel. They had no feelings towards what they had done. But when it comes to taking myspace and youtube off of the internet i think that is stupid. There are alot of responsible kids and young adults that have a myspace and thats how they keep in touch with other friends. I myself have one and many of my friends who live in other places use that to keep me informed on how they are doing. When it comes to youtube, it can be fun and helpful with videos but stupid people who think violence is funny have to do something like this and ruin it for everyone. I have a youtube too, and i have alot of music videos i love to watch on there, but i dont post violence and im a-okay with that. so to answer the main question, i will use a question. When are people going to learn and stop being so stupid?

This is a really surprising and terrible thing. I guess people will do anything for recognition these days. Even if they had submitted this video to YouTube, theres no way it would have been posted, as YouTube has to approve videos before they are put on the website. Now if it had been approved, that would be a serious problem on YouTube's part. It's too bad the whole intent was to get attention. The bad part is, they are still getting what they wanted, as the media is focusing on them for it...

Anonymous said...

I think that it is horrible! I don't think that technology has much to do with it though.

Anonymous said...

Myspace,Youtube, ..ect. , i don't think they are to blame. I think the misuse of them is. You can be smart and just not put any information on them. But yes, its very very misfotunate, and I feel sorry for the girl who got the beating. Whatever she did, or said to the other girls, she didn't deserve it.

This video makes me really sick to my stomach. I think it's really terrible that not only did the girls beat her, but they even videotaped it, which is crazy. I can't believe they just thought they could get away with it. It's really sad.

Anonymous said...

I think this is awful....the fact that they beat her up is bad enough, but then to video tape it and make the weird comments about only being 17 seconds left and to make it good? Something is seriously wrong with those girls.

Anonymous said...

Well first of that is horrible, but I really don't think Myspace, and Youtube are to blame. I mean they can be a fun and easy way to communicate, keep in touch, and express yourself if used properly. I have no idea why you would want to post that for people to see or why you would ever want to do that. These girls obviously people were gonna look up to them for this to bad it's gonna do the total opposite. I feel myspace and youtube should have a little more screening over what can be posted.

My sympathy goes out to Victoria and her family, because what happened to her is shockingly horrifying. I don't believe violence is ever a way to try to get even, no matter what may have been said. Yet there is a part of me after reading the article, that feels her parents could have done more for her, i mean they got in a fight and she wasn't even living with them at the time. Must have been some argument. That to me, seems like more of a problem that should be addressed to prevent teenage beatings. Myspace, Youtube, and the internet should not be put at fault for these types of situations; this is just a way to try and put the blame on someone or something else. These types of sites can have purposeful uses such as staying in touch w/ friends, but once something bad happens it never goes unnoticed.

I think that those girls should be punished, cruel punishment...like it really ticks me off! And its crazy they still posted it on Utube... i know some people might want to see it but they gave them exactly what they wanted, they put it on utube.... im disgusted with this..that poor girl.

What happened to Victoria was nothing other than horrifying to watch from what was released. Nobody deserves to be beaten like that over and over again especially without any set reason. I think this just comes to show what people are capable of doing if they have enough anger built up. A lot of people do things like this just to get attention and posting it on websites like myspace and youtube would only get them more attention.

MySpace and YouTube are definitely not supposed to be used for that purpose, but it is going to happen....obviously. I stay away from MySpace...I really don't know why, but i use facebook and YouTube quite frequently. I believe I use them for the right reason, unless posting cool videos of a band, and writing on my friends "wall" is crime, then I would be doing twenty to life!

Anonymous said...

That is wrong what the girls did to the 16 year old girl. I couldn't even imagine why they would beat her the way they did. There is nothing the girl could have done to deserve that. Those girls should be sent to juvenile prison. The parents made some really good points. The websites need to filter what is put on a little better. The websites aren't full of bad stuff, there is just clips that should not be on places like youtube. There are still a lot of websites that shouldn't be on the internet, and they do need to be taken care of.

Anonymous said...

I think that you have to watch what you put on the internet because people like to be nosey and get on your account. The people didn't even have a reason to hurt the girl. This world is so crazy at times and you don't know what is going to happen next so watch what you put on the internet.

It is really scary to think of what some people are capable of doing. They say they didn't think it was a big deal, but they had to know they were seriously hurting this girl. As far as the parents comments on the internet, and more specifically myspace, youtube etc. I agree with them, it is going to far. You can literally read or watch almost anything you want on the internet; people dying and getting beaten have no place being on there for public viewing.

the first time this was on the news and my mom thought that it was the worst thing that we had ever seen and i think that Youtube and myspace ect...should not be blamed for this and that they should not be band from the internet because they didnt do it and we have tried to keep my friends from joining myspace.

For a long time I have spoken out against MySpace, I do not support it any sense, it is dangerous in almost all aspects. On other utilities, such as FaceBook, they make your profile a "contact-only" profile, until you change it only your friends can view it. On MySpace any pedophile or pervert can find your profile and learn all about you from MySpace.

i also think that it was very domeb that everyone thinks that youtube had something to do with the video and the parents do nt care and they had to tell the news that it was all youtubes falt. they said that They were going to go as far as it will go and that he will take the person to coart and he will take them off the internet and that he will go forever and he dont care.

Okay I don't remember if i reply to this blog, but i will post something anyways. Well, I am sick and tired of adults blaming everything on the media it really is frustrating because they don't really affect the way teenagers do things. Its like when some one says that the music affects the way we think; it does to an extent but for the most part it has nothing to do with things we do.

That would suck. Plain and simple. To show no remorse, and they probably just did it for fun. There is no punishment for kids these days.
