Ah..the dreaded WHITE LIST.

As some (or most) of you know, when a student is on the ineligibility list, they are placed on a "white list" on their laptop so that they may only access certain educational web sites.  This week I want you to discuss your feelings about the white list:  Is it effective?  Does it motivate students to get their grades up?  These are just a few items you could discuss.  Have a great weekend.

I believe that when a student is put on the "white list" it is usually very effective for making students get their grades up because, without internet most students have troubles keeping up their other grades and they realize this and work harder when it is back so they do not lose it again. Also by being put on the "white list" some students have a harder time getting their grades up so they can be taken off the "white list" because they need the internet to get their grades up, so you can see where the troubles are in this.

I have never been white listed and personally don't want to be. I am not really sure on it's effectiveness on the students. I know it would effect me a lot if I got "white listed". It would actually make me start failing my classes. I need internet to do most of everything in Spanish, as well as, to do my blogs in English. I do check my email during school sometimes, but that is when I have nothing that I need to do. There are some sites that I think you should be able to get on during school when you have nothing else to do. I do disagree with some people that get white listed though. I heard someone complaining that they should be able to still use their internet at home. I don't agree because if they are so worried about wanting to get on facebook or use the internet at all at home, then they should've just waited until then in the first place.

well; being one of those students having the great privileges of the white list ineligibility, i can tell you from experience its extremely frustrating at times, our school learning is based mostly entirely on the internet, so if you have the majority of the sites blocked then it gets difficult to catch up on grades in school thus digging your self a bigger hole.

I have never been whitelisted before, but I imagine things would be pretty difficult for certain classes. I use a fairly wide variety of sites for research in my classes and occasionally use Google for just quick find on information, such as an address or name or something.

I understand why it's in place, and I'm not really sure what a more suitable system would be. I think in most cases it acts a deterrent more than a punishment, but for certain cases I could see where it would be harsh and make it quite a bit more difficult to get grades up.

I think its a good thing to do because the students need to realize that if they don't get there things done that things will get taken away. If they don't want that then they need to get there things done.

I think being white listed would be really hard to continue doing homework, I use the internet for lots of things. I think it is effective though for those who don't use the internet at school for school related purposes. We got these computers for educated purposes. So, if your not using it for that reason you should have a punishment for it. Which is being white listed.

I never been in the white list before, and I hope I'll never will. I don't really think that's a good idea to punish students because the most efficient way to raise there grades is by not being in the "white list" and be able to have access to the internet and other applications that are blocked due to the white list.

I have never been white listed, but i believe it is an effective way to motivate students to get their grades up or to keep on task during school. A couple of my friends have been or are currently white listed, and they don't enjoy it one bit. We are currently doing a very large research project in english class, and without the internet it makes it extremely hard to get homework done in order to pass the class. So I believe it is an effective method.

I would have to say that being white list is effective because when you get white list it would be harder to keep the grades up. It would teach the student that when they get off from white list they would work hard to not get white list again.

I think that i would be extremely hard to get over the addiction of being on the internet. Being white listed would make this addiction come to a stop though. I think that it has it's up's and downs but will putting a student on the white list really help them? I mean we have teachers that know certain students are on the white list but yet those teachers still does assign homework that has to be done over the internet. This would put more if not a hole lot more stress on the student and probably make them not want to deal with the issue.

The white list was made as a deterrent and punishment from becoming off-task or flunking, and I have to say that it seems to be doing it's job very well. Limiting sites, thus limiting your range of access to some material, making researching difficult but there are other options that students are being encouraged to use; such as the desktop Macs in the library.

White listing is extremely effective cause the student want the internet back and that need grows so the student works harder to achieve this goal to get there back and they stay caught up.

When a student is doing something they shouldn't on there lab top. Then get white listed, well its deserved then. Its a very effective system for students to get there grades up, or just to learn to be on educational sites.

I've never been white listed. I think it's an effective way to keep people on task, but it doesn't encourage kids to keep good grades up. With only a limited number of sites accessible, it would be very hard to continue to do homework. I almost think if you have decent grades you shouldn't be white listed. Because sometimes I have classes where I have all your work done and would like to get on e-mail or something. However, everyone's grades are different, so a C might be very good for one person but for another a C might be just as bad as failing the class. I think the threat of the white list definitely keeps me on task when I use the computer during school. I don't want to get my internet limited so I stay on task.

Nobody wants to be put on the white list because it limits their access to the internet. This method is slightly effective for keeping students of facebook and sites like that. However, as far as getting their grades up, it's a lot harder when you don't have access to certain sites. I have also heard some people say that when they get white listed, they can't use word or powerpoint. I don't know if that's all true, but if it is, then the computer would be pointless in trying to improve the grade in classes that require those certain applications.

I think the white list makes it very difficult for students to follow most classes. I'm sure it's very effective because students can't use the computer after school for anything else than homework.

I think that white listing is very affective by the use of a punishment. But is a big problem for some of the teachers when they need a student to access a website and they are white listed.

I think that the white list helps making easy internet access hard but i don't believe it helps students pick up their grades because they just won't do anything during class time in some cases being white listed. I think the guidelines of being white listed should be less severe.

I think that being white listed actually makes it harder to get homework done because i have had to go get my teen biz back a few times already and i can't google things if i need it for my homework. I mean i can understand being whitelisted for facebook but really for homework use? i think not.

I haven't been on the white list, but I don't think it would be very fun. Often for my school work I have to go the google and if it was blocked then i would have to do that homework at home. I would have to find the information on there, set up my laptop, answer the questions or record the information onto my laptop and then continue going back and forth until i was done. I do think that the white list is effective, but once students are off the white list then they are likely to continue playing games and slacking off on their work again, so...The white list works while it is in effect but not when it isn't in effect.

i have never been white listed before & i really don't want to be either . i guess the positive side about being white listed for the students who have been would be it would make them probably get their grades up , you know , give them a boost to make them want to get their grades up . the negative side about being white listed would be without internet how are students suppose to work on assignments on the internet ? we have to think of those things . there are some positive and negatives about being white listed but like i said i have never been white listed and i dont want to be .

I believe that being put on a white list is effective because it takes away all of the distractions that a student has. I know that when im doing homework it always takes me double the time it usually would because i always wonder off and do something else. So by taking away all of those things it would make it easier to focus on just the homework.

I do think the white list is a good thing for that situation if the student is still able to get on a site they need to for class. A lot of people complain about it but they don't need to use that stuff if there grades are that low anyways. It might not motivate them to do the stuff but they don't need the extras.

Keep the whitelist. With that said the responsibility is 100% with the parent to make sure your child is doing what they should be doing when online. I check my kids computer every week randomly.
