What is your first memory of technology?

This week I want you to think back as far as you can and recall what is your first memory of technology.  Your generation is thought of to be "Digital Natives" - that is you have GROWN UP with technology around you and don't know anything different.  My generation is thought of to be "Digital Immigrants" and that we did not grow up with it.  Talk about your earliest memories of technology and how you think that shapes who you are today.

I can't say I even remember when the first time I was introduced to technology. As far as I can remember, I have been around it ever since I was little. Now technology is around way more than what it was back then, 16 years ago.

I don't really know what my first memory of technology is. I can remember when my grandma bought us kids a computer for my moms house, but that is all I can really remember.

The only thing I remember seeing when I was little was my dads camera. I don't remember what kind it was or anything, but I know it was big and expensive. That's also a reason why I want to become a photographer.

The earliest I remember using a computer was a year before I entered Kindergarten. There was an old, old, old Mac at my country school that had the giant 5"+ floppy drive. I remember playing Oregon Trail on it while my dad had school board meetings. I miss that thing.

I don't really know what my first memory of technology was, but I do remember having a computer in my room when I was in elementary school and I used to play that Oregon Trail game all the time. Then bebo and MSN were a big thing for me in elementary. I spent many hours on my computer.

I remember for one of my earliest birthdays, say around 4th or 5th, I received a typewriter. This wasn't one of those electric ones. This was one of those that you had to almost punch the button just to get it to type. By the time I got done using it my fingers hurt soooo bad... But on that same birthday I got a calculator and pens and office supplies... I must admit.. I was a weird kid :/

I would say a computer, When I was like in 1st grade my mom's friend had a computer and I though they were really cool, and that only rich people could have one of those, cause back then they were really expensive. Every time we went over to her house I just to get really exited and ask her if I could play games on it.

I remember my teacher scooting me up to an fairly old computer and getting me on to the games. But that is about it. Honestly i think that it just got me into being very distracted and unfocused. Having the Mac has probably made it easier but i don't think that they actually help with the "learning" process.

My first memory of true technology would be watching my brother play a computer game called 'Red Alert', I believe it was the first edition. I was only three or five but that would be my first memory, maybe I remember because I wasn't allowed to touch the computer out of fear I would break it.

My first technology experience that i can recall is being in grade school. I remember working on the old slow computers doing minimal things. I thought it was a real treat at the time.

My first memory of using technology, was when I was about 4-5 years old. It was the Old Nintendo with the only game I had which was Mario. Now its 2009/2010 and the world has now: Play Station 2, Play Station 3,The 360 and much more. I also have another memory which is my first game boy the very old style ones. I don't have it anymore though. I dropped it in the toilet. Technology has change in a great range of different things and will continue to grow.

I don't remember my first experience with technology. But I do remember watching the TV show Arthur and also playing on the computer. My sister and I used to play Oregon Trail. I think it kind of shapes who I am today because I have a lot of memories from technology growing up. It teaches me how much technology has changed and also the fun we had playing our games.

My first memory of technology was when I was 6 or 7 years old. A friend of mine got an old nintendo. Before he got his nintendo we used to play soccer but when he got it we spend all our time in front of that for about a month.

It's hard to think that far back, but I do remember that my aunt gave us a Super Nintendo for Christmas when I was probably six or seven. I also remember playing with my aunts bag phone that she had in her car.

Hey, O'Neill!
I appreciate the opportunity to check out all the ways you are using technology to learn and teach.

Some of my memories of technology include our friends down the street having a Beta machine to record shows on television. The Beta came before VCR's. Also, my brother and I played a game called Lemonade Stand as well as the Oregon Trail game. I wish I could remember the name of this program where we could plan out our garden by designing the space, placing the flowers in the desired spots. Then, we could press a couple of buttons, and the computer would show us what the yard would look like for each season.

A little history lesson. . . :) My friend what we called a "bag phone" which was this huge phone in a case as big of some of your larger purses now. It had to be plugged into the cigarette lighter to work, and it was strictly for emergencies since the minutes were so expensive.

I had my first email account in 1993 during my first year of college. Even though I went to Wayne State College, the account was through the University of Florida, and four of us shared it.

Well, technology is changing for sure. I'm excited!

Sincerely,

I would have to say my first memory of technology would be my friends mom had a bag phone in her car and that was before the cell phones actually came out. I just remember it being the coolest thing ever and I always wanted to play with it. Then when i was about a 4th grader i remember my brother got his own cell phone and it was a little Motorola and i thought that was the sweetest thing i had ever seen! i remember it rang one time and i was like "AWESOME!!!!" then gradually at school we got hp flat screen computers which i always tried to get my work done as fast as I could so i could go play on them! But i would say that technology has had a big part in my life and if we dont have the training for it then we might not be as successful as we could be. I think with everything I've learned through my years of school is great. Meaning I have the old fashion pencil and paper and the technology way. I think kids in my generation have it the best because we have experience with both! ~ MW
