$200 laptop?

Check out this link about the $200 laptop that Nicholas Negroponte, a professor at MIT, has produced. There is a 12 minute video there that is very interesting if you would like to learn more about it. After visiting the link, blog about what you think about this idea. You might compare what you see with these students getting laptops with our experience here at OHS. Also vote on the Hot Tech Items Poll on the right. Thanks, have a great "cold" weekend. NOTE: When you blog, it has changed. You need to put your name in the NICKNAME box then post.

I think it is a good idea. So that way other kids have the opportunity to learn just like us. I would like to buy a laptop for only $200 and it has like everything on it and it can be out in the rain and it wont ruin it. There is not going be any other computer like that one.

Well, I definitely do think this is really cool. However, I do kind of question Negroponte's interests because it seems like since he was so upset with Intell that he is just trying really hard to get famous. If it was purely humanitarian, then wouldn't he be thrilled that other companies want to join the cause?

I think what he's doing is great because not many people feel like they need to help other kids in different countries learn because their not here in plain view for them to see. I think if more people visited these kids they'd receive alot more help.

i think it is a good idea because other kids can learn how to use a laptop and they can even leave it out in the rain and you can do every thing that you need to and it is only $200 that is not that expensive.

well what i think of the laptops is that some of the people don't have money to get laptops. like if something happened to the laptop is it refundable.
at least the schools do have computers for school students to use for assignments.

I think that it is good so the laptops are cheaper then the dell and mac and they can also do the school work that those types of computer can do

I think its a GREAT idea!!! I even want one! I think it will give lower classes in society a chance to learn just as much and they can better themselves in the process because they are learning how to take what they know and apply it to what they need to accomplish in learning about a computer!I bet after a couple years a lot of computer companies are going to see this and have it come into play in their next productions out of the industry as well!!

i think this is a great idea. if they could get lap tops to other kids that live in poor countries then that opens the range of everything, think that 1/6 of the children that get them could be a brilliant inventor someday. one that maybe couldn't have done it with out the experience of having that computer! and that if rich americans get in on this and they buy one for another kid, they could be the creator or step up for that kid inventor!

The idea of a laptop, one for every child (eventually in the world) is a great idea, but as it mentions in the article, with today's technology/costs it isn't really realistic...yet.

I think the whole program is very interesting and an idea that should be brought to more attention (putting on 60 minutes was great but if they had more it would be better). I checked the link to see the actual laptops (laptop.org), they aren't the greatest laptop, no dual core processor with a 2GHz clock speed but they are completely worth the $100 price tag...yes $100 dollars, you are getting 2 laptops for $100 dollars each.

Even though they aren't a Dell XPS laptop or something amazing don't think of it that way if you want to buy one for a child in a third world country, think of it as them getting an education they really need. As it mentioned in the article a kid who's never seen electricity before is now getting a laptop with internet access...think of what these kids have the potential to do when giving the right resources (i.e. a laptop).

I suppose that's really all that I can say about it...I might actually buy one if they become more available than just the internet!

I think that its awesome that Negroponte is trying to get every child out there a laptop but i do question him. He talks about how he's not trying to make money on the deal and just wants to provide to the children but two other companies are trying to do the same and help out and Negroponte is furious with them. He should be grateful that other companies are trying to help out with the dream but he's not therefore i say he's halfway in it for the money for sure. But i guess either way uneducated poor children are receiving laptops so more power to them.

I think this is a great idea and i have heard about this before. I really hope this can help. Its hard to imagine this being achieved but i think if multiple companies could find some agreement it would be possible

I think that its a good idea. I like the idea of them being low cost, so that someone else will get a lab top also.

This is a great program to help kids throughout the nation. For kids that don't have the opportunity to buy a laptop this will really give them an unforgettable learning experience. I don't know if I'd actually want one though because $200 is probably not going to get you the greatest computer so I think I'd rather go with a mac or something. However, for these kids I think this is an awesome opportunity for them.

i think it is a good idea that they guy had because it will reach out to the kids in third world countries and will give them the opportunity to learn more and be more educated on the stuff they need to know so that they can make better choices in the future and help the communities they live in.

Not bad, i would buy that. i wish that dell and the other big companies would make waterproof keyboards and have better wifi range. that would be nice. my laptops gonna cost like $2700 bucks. i wish itd be cheaper, but its not. this would be a great laptop for all the poor countries. i personally think that intel and the other companies should just shut up and join forces, more would get done then.

I think this is great idea that Negroponte is creating because he is giving many unprivileged children throughout the world an opportunity to learn with technology. Giving that laptops only cost $200, it would be ideal that someday ever child throughout the world would have the opportunity to receive one of these. If i was still a kid i would love to have one of these.

I think that it is a good idea. However, i feel that Negroponte's goal is to get famous, because he is feuding with intell. If it was for a humanitarian cause, then he would probably excited other companies want to join. Since its really cheap, this helps many people with financial needs.

I think the idea that Negropante had was a good one. I think it is going to be very nice for the people who cant afford the laptops that cost about $1000 to 2000. With the $200 computer it sounds like the kids will be able to do the basics needed. Although the computer isn't going to have the extra stuff that costs more it will get the job done. The article was a very good one.

I think that its amazing that the people can make such a great machine for such a small price. I think it is a great idea for the poor countries, and we will only see positives come from this

i think it is a great idea. Even though there are obvious flaws, the results it could bring are hard to ignore. If children in third world countries could each get a computer, they could become much more educated and learn more about the world, which could help them to get out of poverty. Also, there are so many things you can do for work if you have computer knowledge. So if these kids can learn, it will help them.

Anonymous said...

Well it is a good idea but, don't they need food first. it is pretty good idea those computers would be of use around here for a lot of people.

i think that it is a good idea and that it will allow a lot of underprivaleged kids to learn, but i think that it is different because laptops are more well normal to us and to them a laptop has to be just amazing. I think he is a good man with an amazing idea, but like all people who take on collosal projects like the one he has is that he feels like it is his baby, his masterpeice. I think that if other companies made computers like this for children then the world would be a more educated place and thus a slightly better place.

It is a great idea that they are trying to get laptops for almost every child. especially one for only two hundred dollars. The video closely resembles how the students here at OHS are feeling to get their own laptop.

I think its a great idea and its really cool. Giving those kids the opportunity to learn and for them to able to take part in todays technology. Its real neat that they can be in the rain without being ruined.

I think the "One Laptop Per Child" idea is great. It's so cool that people have found ways to tailor these to people in place where no electricity exists, or where they need to be extremely durable and visible in sunlight outdoors. This can only help those who maybe do not attend school or are too poor, and the fact that the organization is a non-profit one is really neat too.

I personally think that this is a good idea. The poor kids in other countries would really like computers. Its true when they adress the issue on how kids will become smarter with more technology. I have seen stone-age teaching supplies and i think computers would be good everyone. I also think Intel and the other dude should work together to get the point done. I mean if they stopped arguing and gave out computers they would come close to every child having a computer.

Anonymous said...

I think that what he's doing is a good idea. I'd definitely buy one if it helped other kids in other countries learn more.

This is a very beneficial idea! It's amazing how hi-tech those computers are. If it was a little bigger I would want one! Its a very worth while project.

i really think that this is a good idea. it helps the poor countries become more into technology and hopefully make the country not a 3rd world country. it may change the way they see life. they may also learn how to grow crops learn things they haven't. i also like how there really child proof to. that you can poor water on it with out it getting ruined. i also like the theft control to. lets get these instead of the macs!!!!! even though they look a little childish

Yes it is a very great idea that he has for having children in different countries to get a laptop and it has been proven in the article there that the school % went up and it will continue to go up and he is right it seems that the younger generation can just get on a new technology these days and know how it works.

Maybe not know everything that is to know but they would start clicking on some of the buttons and the icon that are on the desktop and will sooner or later figure out a little bit about the laptop or at least a program that they would click on and find out how it worked.

One thing is that they are small laptop then the competitor of intel's CLASSMATE and so that is the down thing but it has good features on it to like it can work out in the hot weather and dust don't come it to it and so it is still a successful laptop don't get me wrong and I think the kid shouldn't care what kind of laptop to get just be glad that they got one. It was a good Article and he has a good plan.

Wow...pretty awesome! I dont see anything wrong with this! What a great thing to do for those in need. I really think this would be amazing to be able to do this for one STATE let alone, the entire world!!! Technology is something that eventually EVERYONE will need to use, thinking about how important it is right now, its crazy to think what the world will be like in 2030!!! This would be a great start!

i think its a good idea because it gives other kids the oppertunities to learn. he is showing that people still care about other peoples education.

I think that is a pretty neat idea I mean I would totally do something like that. It gives all kids an opportunity to have an education and have the experience with technology. I totally would buy one just so a kid can have one. That guy has a terrific idea and I just love it!!!

Anonymous said...

I think it is an amazing idea. I hope that a lot more people and companies stand behind it! I think it will create many opportunities for people from other countries!

I think that it is a good idea. The kids can have the chance to have a laptop that can be in the rain and it only costs $200
